Christopher had never been able to take his kids on a vacation and wanted to make some new and amazing memories. And while there were plenty of heartwarming memories, it was his brother who created the most memorable part of his trip.
Chris was diagnosed with ALS in 2022. He reached out to Team Gleason with the help of his social worker so he could take as many family members as he could to Universal Studios Hollywood. They packed four adults and four kids into two hotel rooms.
“It was like camping,” Chris said. His favorite part of the adventure was being able to spend time with his brothers, sisters and children.
They were able to spend two days at Universal, which wasn’t smooth sailing. Transferring from his wheelchair to the rides proved too difficult after a few tries.
“The challenge was being lifted up and put in my chair,” said Chris. “After a while my body started hurting bad. The rides I could ride on I had to be picked up and put on. It was painful. I didn’t go on much.”
And for advice on others who want to make the trip to Universal: “Pick something that’s more handicap accessible. It wasn’t very accessible. Don’t get me wrong, it was fun. It’s just that you’re limited on what you can do.”
Despite the challenges, the rides did leave a lasting impression.
The most memorable part of the adventure for Chris?
“When my brother threw up on himself. That was the funny part. On Harry Potter,” said Chris. “Which brother is a secret.”
Even with the standard brotherly teasing, it was really about being with his family and creating new memories.
“It meant the world to me. I got to spend time with my kids and do something I can’t afford with them. Something I’ll have the memory of them. It meant a lot.”
